Artist Statement

My work utilizes magic realism to explore ideas of escapism, including horror, sexuality, and fantasy. Addressing the innate impact of our shared experiences, my work explores themes of time, mortality, emotion, and social/environmental issues. I use storytelling and fantasy to explore the value in life and our connection to time, each other, technology, and our environment. These connections are important in recognizing our own existence and respecting the existence of others. I want my work to showcase our connections, while simultaneously existing in a world separate from our own, allowing for the aspects that do relate to our reality to be considered individually.

I am interested in themes of time, including our obsession with the future and our constant reminiscence of the past. I explore these ideas by portraying time periods that showcase the past, present, and future in a way that impacts the work's context or story. Connected to the passage of time, ideas of mortality influence my work through symbolic horror aspects intended to convey vulnerability and uncertainty. Our perception of mortality has an impact on how we experience life, and I want to present it as a natural function connected to and progressing alongside us. As our shared experience is a defining aspect of the human condition, the main purpose for my use of fantasy is to isolate our common connections to our natural and social environment. Similarly, as a way of exploring difficult issues, it is an established role of sci-fi, fantasy, and pop culture to talk about human realities in other worlds for purposes of escapism and consideration of the human experience. I wish to join in this conversation with other storytelling artists such as Hayao Miyazaki, Rebecca Léveillé, and H.R. Giger.
