Artist Statement
My work utilizes magic realism and fantasy as a deliberate form of foil to the more mundane aspects of life. Serving not only to highlight the storytelling present in my work but also to create a space where the shared human experience can be isolated and examined more clearly. By weaving elements that transcend everyday reality into familiar settings, I aim to draw attention to the subtle, often overlooked aspects of our lives and emotions. This approach allows the fantastical to act as a mirror, reflecting the deeper truths that unite us all.
It has long been my intention to explore and emphasize the invisible threads that connect us, focusing on universal themes such as time, mortality, sexuality, emotion, and our relationship with nature. These concepts are just a few of the many avenues through which I have begun to investigate the complexities of the human condition. Each story crafted is an invitation to contemplate these themes through a lens that is both imaginative and grounded, encouraging viewers to recognize their own reflections within the narrative.
My biggest influences stem from the rich realms of folklore and pop culture or, more accurately, the stories we tell each other to entertain, teach, and endure. These stories, though often set in worlds separate from our own, hold an undeniable resonance because they speak to shared experiences and emotions that transcend time and place. In these liminal spaces between reality and imagination, the human condition is laid bare in ways that are at once fantastical and profoundly real. Through this, I strive to honor the power of storytelling as a bridge connecting us across difference, grounding even the most surreal tales in the universal pulse of life.
Juxtaposition is the primary force used in my artwork, to lead both narrative and visual interest. The female form is the most vital aspect, it is used as a base to connect any fantastical elements to the human psyche, while simultaneously allowing profound amounts of eternal expression. Viewing many characters within my work as avatars to slip into and truly experience my own emotions. This process of communicating through fantasy forces me to find my own clarity within the human condition in order to express my experience visually.
An avenue I find myself returning to is the juxtaposition of intense femininity, softness, and aesthetic beauty to darkness, violence, and horror elements. This contradiction creates emotional tension with the goal of opening dialog on the female experience. The lens strived for, creates space for curiosity while simultaneously commenting on the desensitization to violence.
